Our Statement on the 2020 Election Results

Last Saturday, the 2020 presidential election was called for Joe Biden by every major news network. Although the composition of the US Senate and its majority is yet to be decided, the MinKwon Center joins the collective relief and joy felt across the country that an administration explicitly built on White supremacy and the dehumanization of our communities was soundly rejected for a second term. By nearly five million votes and counting, the people decided we do not want more of the same.

The result was a victory for all of us, and it was made possible by the millions of Asian Pacific American, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, immigrant, young, first-time, and re-enfranchised voters and organizers. It was made possible by the thousands of community-based organizations and activists on-the-ground empowering their neighbors to vote and ensuring access to the ballot.

It was made possible by MinKwon's continued collaboration with over a dozen APA organizations under APA VOICE. It was made possible by the 124 MinKwon get-out-the-vote volunteers and staff who sent over 80,000 texts, made over 9,000 calls, mailed over 19,000 multilingual voter guides, and produced 3 multilingual videos to remind and educate New York voters on how to vote in the primary and general elections.

John Park, Executive Director of the MinKwon Center, said: "This election has been the most important election in my lifetime, because not only are so many people's lives and futures at stake, the very foundations of our democracy are at stake. I am proud that everyday people raised their voice and defended our democracy, a reality that Trump must now accept."

As the last remaining votes are counted, we must monitor any recounts and legal challenges aimed at disenfranchising voters. In the end, Trump must concede to Biden and commit to a peaceful transition of power, and the Electoral College must align with the will of the voters in every state. Most importantly, we must remain vigilant in protecting the rights of everyone to exercise their voice.
