Last night, over 400 people gathered together for MinKwon Center's 34th annual gala: Our Voices, Our Future. It was a night of somber reflection, as 2018 proved to be an difficult year for immigrant, refugee and asylum-seeking families across the United States, and a year marked with continued, intersecting attacks against women, LGBTQ people, people of color, and people in poverty. Yet it was also a night of hope, as we celebrated the incredible work MinKwon and our allies have done in supporting, defending, advocating and organizing our immigrant communities.
We provided over $2 million worth of social benefits for Korean and Asian community members in 2018, and processed the applications of over 7% of all Korean American DACA recipients in the U.S. since 2012. We showed up to over 20 visibility protests and actions locally and nationally to protect immigrant rights, including leading a protest at Trump Tower and in Flushing. We joined with organizations across the state of New York in advocating for Drivers Licenses for All. We registered over 80,000 new immigrant voters since 2004, and we expect to knock on over 7,000 doors between now and November 6 for the midterm elections. We are joining the fight against the proposed new rules to Public Charge and the citizenship question on the Census, including as a lead plaintiff on a federal lawsuit.
We refuse to remain on the sidelines as the racist, misogynistic, anti-immigrant Trump administration attempts to dismantle our most fundamental civil and human rights. MinKwon thanks the sponsors, supporters, elected officials, community members and volunteers for coming out to celebrate our commit to empower our community and achieve justice and equality for all.
