#Citizenship4All Update: U.S. Citizenship Act

Citizenship For All and the 100 Days Campaign have been busy demanding a pathway for citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States regardless of race, age, ability and history with incarceration. As of Day 35 on Tuesday, February 23, 6,541 petitions were signed, 4,196 calls to Congress were made, and 2,769 emails to Congress were sent. If you’d like to get involved, sign up to phone-dogmobilize to DC, and sign our petition!

On Thursday, February 18, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA-38) introduced President Joe Biden’s long awaited immigration bill, the U.S. Citizenship Act, to the U.S. House of Representatives, with Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) introducing the same bill into the U.S. Senate. Although the Act outlines a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants and revamps the family-based immigration system, a testament to decades of organizing and advocacy by undocumented people themselves, it still excludes immigrants caught up in the criminal legal system. We actively oppose these criminal bars that enforce the narrative that some of our community members are "more deserving" of status than others. We believe every person is deserving of their full human rights including citizenship.

On Saturday, February 20, we safely celebrated the Lunar New Year in D.C. with a Jisinbalpgi event. We welcomed the Year of the Ox’s new spirits: Citizenship for All, unity, love and peace, and chased out the evil spirits of previous administrations for an end to all detentions, deportations, family separation, and anti-immigrant hatred!

Emergency Protest for Black Immigrants with NAKASEC, February 10

Remember Black History, Defend Black Immigrants

This month marks Black History Month, a time of both celebration and urgency. We celebrate and honor the history and achievements of Black Americans, while reflecting on centuries of resilience in face of systemic oppression. With this reflection, it is clear that although valuable anti-racist progress has been accomplished, there is still much that has to change.

Since the beginning of this month, hundreds of Black immigrants have been deported by the Biden Administration despite his recent 100 Day Moratorium on deportations. Marcela García of the Boston Globe writes:

"We may have a new president, but the machinery of government sometimes churns with heartbreaking inertia — as if Joe Biden weren’t in the White House. Case in point: the deportation of hundreds of Haitians this month, a move straight out of former president Donald Trump’s playbook. For these Haitians, fleeing a country suffering in deep poverty, Trump might as well be in charge. As would-be asylum seekers, the Haitian migrants, most of whom came to the United States recently through Mexico, have been denied the opportunity for due process in an asylum system that’s broken and that the Biden administration is working [sic] to fix."

The MinKwon Center stands in solidarity with the Haitian and African immigrants who have been deported by the Biden administration. Biden and DHS Secretary Mayorkas must stop these deportations and return deportees back to the U.S.: sign this petition by UndocuBlack Network.

Donate to Our New Flushing Community Fridge!

Help establish a new community fridge for Flushing, organized by the MinKwon Center Youth Organizing Committee and local volunteers! A community fridge is a well-stocked, standalone refrigerator that is accessible to anyone who needs it. Residents and local businesses are welcome to put any food in or take any food out, so the fridge feeds the community and cuts down on waste. We only have $245 remaining for our $2,000 goal! Donate to our GiveLively page, sign up to volunteer, and check us out on Instagram for updates!
