Call Gov. Cuomo: Support Bills to Cancel Rent/Mortgage Payments!

Dear MinKwon Community,

Tomorrow is May 1st, which means that rent is due for millions of New Yorkers. For low-income, undocumented, senior, and limited English proficient Korean and Asian Americans who lost their jobs and can't work because of New York's shelter-in-place order, this may be their second month where they can't pay their rent or mortgage. They join the 40% of New Yorkers who can't pay a single month's rent if they're unemployed.

New bills in the State legislature has the potential for immediate relief: New York State Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris has sponsored Senate Bill S8125A and Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou has sponsored the Assembly version of the bill A10224A. If these bills pass and are signed into law, rent and mortgage payments would be CANCELED for 90 days for community members who could not work due to COVID-19.

We believe that this is a fair solution to the people of New York, whose lives have been upended by a global pandemic. While there is currently a state-wide moratorium on evictions, it does NOT go far enough: tenants would be required to pay months' worth of back rent when the pandemic is over, facing eviction if they can't pay. It is unjust for the State to expect New Yorkers to have months' worth of rent in savings when they have been living paycheck to paycheck before COVID-19 and can't work until further notice.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has refused to support rent and mortgage cancelation for impacted New Yorkers. We need him to recognize the hardship and injustice in our communities and offer serious protection to his constituents. Help us in demanding Cuomo do what needs to be done:

CALL the office of Governor Cuomo, (518) 474-8390, and say "I want Governor Cuomo to support Gianaris' and Niou's bills for rent and mortgage cancelation."

Contact the MinKwon Center, (718) 460-5600, if you need to speak to us for any matter regarding COVID-19. We're with you as always.
