PASS THE DREAM ACT NOW

When the President made the decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program last September, it unnecessarily put the lives of nearly 800,000 young Americans at risk. Since then, Congress has been unable to do their jobs and pass a legislative solution that nearly 90 percent of the country supports.

With another federal budget deadline and the possibility of another government shutdown approaching on February 8, the Dreamers and our country's broader immigration policies will again take center stage. The White House is using this as an opportunity to make Dreamers a bargaining chip in exchange for its most extremist and xenophobic policy goals. They released a draft immigration proposal that would dramatically limit legal immigration, end family reunification policies, pour billions of dollars into the construction of a futile southern border wall, and further embolden and encourage the deportation apparatus that unfairly tears families apart.

The MinKwon Center is strongly against this proposal and is proud to stand with Dreamers who refuse to accept a bill that grants them protection but puts their families and friends at increased risk for deportation.

MinKwon is mobilizing an advocacy day in Washington D.C. for our Dreamers on Wednesday, February 7. We must continue putting pressure on our representatives in Congress and demand they pass the Dream Act without criminalizing other immigrant groups and fundamentally changing America's immigration system. If you can't join us in D.C., you can still put pressure on Congress with your letters and calls. We encourage everyone to call their representatives in Congress and demand they vote for a clean Dream Act.

JUSTICE FOR RAVI RAGBIR

MinKwon was proud to present our Standing Up For Justice award to immigrant rights activist Ravi Ragbir at our 2017 gala. Ravi has spent years fighting against unjust deportations and calling for long overdue immigration reforms. Despite being a pillar in the community, Ravi was still targeted by ICE for deportation because of an old wire fraud conviction. Earlier this month, ICE detained him during a routine monthly check in, even though Ravi still had pending legal challenges against both his criminal conviction and his removal orders. Ravi's detainment was part of a troubling trend of ICE targeting immigration activists.

Thankfully, a federal judge ruled that Ravi was illegally detained and ordered his release!

Thank you so much to everyone who made calls and made your voices heard in support of Ravi. We must remember that Ravi isn't the only immigrant rights leader who was detained in the past month across the nation, and we must continue our activism for the most unprotected.
Minkwon joins rally to call for an end to deportations and against the Muslim ban on January 26, 2018.
