A MESSAGE FROM OUR OUTGOING CO-DIRECTOR JAMES HONG AND NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOHN PARK

5703dc5a-9043-4429-ba0f-79183b6cb2ca.jpgAfter eight meaningful years serving the Korean American, Asian American, and immigrant communities through various roles at the MinKwon Center for Community Action, I will be stepping down from my post as co-director at the end of this month.

I am sad to be leaving a close working relationship with co-director John Park, but I know he will do an excellent job as the executive director beginning May 1st.

It has been a tremendous honor to have worked alongside so many of you in our collective struggle for a more just and inclusive society – a struggle that nowadays seems to take on greater meaning and urgency with every passing day.

Looking back, I am proud of the work we’ve accomplished together since I joined MinKwon in 2010, including achieving historic victories in redistricting for Asian American voting rights, building an amazing civic engagement coalition, securing a victory for rezoning advocacy in Flushing, and standing in solidarity with the tremendously important #BlackLivesMatter and LGBT rights movements.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our APA VOICE partners, our funders and supporters, and our allies in civic engagement, immigrant rights, housing, healthcare, labor, good government, and across the movement spectrum. You have inspired me, and I look forward to staying in community with you.

With gratitude,

James Hong
12b3e733-e1e0-408c-9289-fe1fc40d1d1f.jpgI write to you with great humility and enthusiasm as the incoming Executive Director of the MinKwon Center for Community Action. For the past year, I have had the honor of serving as Co-Director with James Hong and I want to thank him for his leadership and tremendous contributions during his eight years with MinKwon. I plan to build on his work in engaging with our community members, supporters and allies in realizing our shared vision for a stronger immigrant community.

Even though it has been 34 years since our founding, MinKwon’s unique role in the community and the need for community action is clearer than ever. I have learned from our community members about resistance and resilience, and the courage and commitment it takes to make real change. Through grassroots organizing, policy innovation, transformative education and survival services, we will build the power of Korean, Asian American and immigrant communities to achieve dignity and justice.

It is meaningful to me that MinKwon has stood up and stood together with directly impacted stakeholders on the front lines of protecting and supporting immigrants and vulnerable communities. With our communities facing unprecedented challenges, I cannot imagine a better organization to contribute to and be a part of.

It is also very meaningful that you have stood with us. Because of you, MinKwon has been able to answer the call to protect, serve and empower, and we hope you will continue to support us now and in the years ahead.

In solidarity,
