RALLYING FOR A MORE EQUITABLE CITY BUDGET

MinKwon community member John Choi speaks at the 15% and Growing Rally in front of City Hall
The MinKwon Center participated in the 10th annual 15% and Growing Campaign rally and advocacy day on April 25. Despite comprising 15 percent of the city's population, Asian-led or serving community based organizations receive only 4 percent of the City's discretionary funding and 1.5 percent of the total human services funding. This means Asian American organizations are not given the full support they need to provide culturally competent and language accessible services for New York's Asian Americans.

The 15% and Growing Campaign calls for a more equitable budget that serves our City's Asian American communities. Funding Asian led or serving organizations will help eliminate barriers to education, health care, employment, and civic participation among our community members.

MinKwon Cent'er co-director John Park spoke about the need for increased social services funding, and John Choi, a MinKwon Center community member, attended the rally and spoke forcefully about the need to fund Asian American organizations. He spoke about his troubles applying for senior housing and noted that the Mayor and the City Council must invest in housing services.

MinKwon is part of the steering committee of the 15% and Growing Campaign, which is comprised of more than 45 Asian led and serving organizations in New York City.

MINKWON JOINS GREEN LIGHT NY CAMPAIGN IN ALBANY

On April 18, MinKwon joined The New York Immigration Coalition, allies, and state legislators in Albany to call for drivers licenses for all immigrants, regardless of their immigration status. More than 700,000 undocumented New Yorkers over the age of 16 cannot currently obtain drivers licenses, and more than 70,000 New Yorkers who currently have TPS or DACA are at risk of losing their status and access to driver's licenses.

Allowing all immigrants, regardless of status, to obtain driver's licenses would make New York's roads and communities safer. It will also strengthen the state's economy with an estimated $57 million in annual revenue, according to the Fiscal Policy Institute.

Twelve states have already passed similar legislation, and it is time for New York to to pass the Green Light NY bill. Call your local Assembly Member and State Senator today and urge them to support Green Light New York!

HAPPENING AT MINKWON

TALKING CENSUS ON NY1

MinKwon's Co-Director John Park went on NY1 to talk about the importance of the Census and the negative impact a citizenship question could pose for Queens, Asian Americans, and all New Yorkers.

The citizenship question has the potential to reduce participation among immigrants in the 2020 Census, which could lead to the loss of representation and loss of funding for hospitals and schools.
